When you’re connected to what I like to call your power zone, and you speak, your presence renders the room silent. For all the right reasons.
Your words might not be perfectly polished. Your voice might waver. Your belly might do the rumba. You might be dressed in a hessian sack. But your message will hit home. Your words will make a difference. They’ll be remembered after everyone’s walked out the door.
Accessing your power zone does take a bit of work.
In Woody Allen’s latest flick, To Rome With Love, there’s a mortician, Giancarlo, who only sings in the shower. And he’s brilliant.
Giancarlo is discovered by a former opera director who hears his singing from the lounge room, and encourages him to audition on stage. In front of a tiny audience Giancarlo coughs and chokes. His singing doesn’t sound anything like it did in the shower. But the opera director refuses to give up on him – and his own desire to come out of retirement.
Have a look at what he comes up with to help Giancarlo sing from his power zone:

We all have very special circumstances in which we shine – or not. Being on stage and touching the hearts of the audience requires dropping the towel and standing naked, wide open, revealing your deepest truth and gifts, from your heart.
There’s no other way. Not if you want to inspire and touch people with your stories. Not if you want a moment of glory that’s not about you. Not if you want the impact of your words to create ripples way beyond the room. Not if you want to make the world a better place.
Standing ovation anyone?
